Collection: Scènes de marché

Market day is one of the most enduring subjects in Haitian painting, a scene repeated across generations of artists because it captures so much of daily life at once: commerce, color, community, and the rhythms of rural and small-town Haiti. These paintings typically depict vendors, produce, textiles, and crowded town squares, often rendered with the flattened perspective and saturated palette that became a signature of the country's early art movement. Because market scenes were painted so widely, they offer collectors a useful lens for comparing style and technique across artists and eras, from tightly composed early works to looser, more expressive contemporary interpretations.
