Description

Philomé Obin (1892 to 1986), the revered founder of the Cap-Haïtien school of Haitian painting, turns to the royal history of Haiti’s north in this composed and richly colored scene from 1972. King Henri Christophe sits in a green military coat with gold epaulettes and tall yellow boots, facing his children in the shade of a monumental tree. Its leaves are painted one by one. Around them, yellow arcaded buildings with red roofs and a patterned stone courtyard frame the moment, while a sentry stands guard at his post. The work is titled “Roi Henri Christophe et ses enfants” and is signed “P. Obin, Cap-Haïtien” at lower right. Obin was known for documenting the history and heroes of Haiti with precision and quiet dignity, and this painting shows his careful draftsmanship and flat, jewel-like color at their best. It comes from a private collection in Florida. Condition is good, consistent with its age. A certificate of authenticity is included.

About this artist

Philome Obin was born in Limbe in 1891 and died in Cap Haitian in 1986. He was self-taught and one of the first Haitian artists to marvel at the world with his naive art. His art is referred to in all major books on Haitian art and mentioned by many art critics internationally.
