Description

In this striking 1982 acrylic on board, Simil renders a woman as pure silhouette, her form dissolved into shadow while gold jewelry, a beaded choker, and a pendant necklace catch the light against her throat. The choice to withhold her face pushes the viewer toward what remains: ornament, posture, and presence. Behind her, a patterned wall hung with gold ceremonial fixtures frames the figure like an altar, while a red drum bordered in gold spirals anchors the composition below, a quiet nod to the tanbou central to Haitian Vodou ceremony and music. This interplay of absence and adornment is characteristic of a strain of Haitian painting that draws as much from spiritual iconography as from portraiture. The work comes from a private collection in Florida and has been held there since acquisition, remaining in excellent condition. Measuring 22 by 24 inches, we will provide a Certificate of Authenticity.

About this artist

Emilcar Similien, known as Simil, was born in 1944 in St. Marc. From 1965 to 1971, he studied painting, sculpture, and art history at the Academy of Beaux-Arts in Port-au-Prince. Simil uses his images of women only to display patterns, color, and the sparkle of gold jewelry on black skin. He paints with acrylics on Masonite of any size. His surfaces are smooth and polished. Simil delights in beauty, elegance, and grace.
