Description

This exquisite oil on canvas by Haitian master André Pierre depicts Makasa Sa Bois (Porte Paroles), a Vodou spirit rendered with luminous color, rhythmic brushwork, and profound spiritual symbolism. Painted circa the 1970s, the composition reveals a sacred altar surrounded by drums, candles, and vegetal forms, evoking both ritual ceremony and divine presence. Pierre, a self-taught artist and devoted Vodou priest, is celebrated for transforming sacred visions into vivid, transcendental imagery. His works embody the bridge between Haiti’s religious traditions and its artistic imagination. This 24"x16" unframed painting comes from a private collection and remains in good condition with minor, age-appropriate wear. A Certificate of Authenticity will be issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery upon purchase.

About this artist

Self-taught Haitian master painter Andre Pierre was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in 1914 and passed away in 2005. He is considered one of Haiti's greatest artists and the pre-eminent painter of the Haitian spirits, the worthy successor of noted Hector Hyppolite. His artworks have been reproduced in many books on naive and religious art. He injects rhythms into his works through lines and colors, says Gerald Alexis in his book Peintres Haitiens. Get the Book "Peintres Haitiens" Now!
