Description

This masterful oil on canvas by Haitian artist André Pierre (1914–2005) portrays a sacred Vodou ritual by the river, where devotees gather under intertwining tree roots to offer food, drink, and prayers to the spirits. Painted circa the 1970s, the work glows with mystical energy, vivid color, and intricate symbolism. Pierre, one of Haiti’s most celebrated painters and a devoted Vodou priest, transformed spiritual devotion into transcendent visual form. His works capture the essence of Haiti’s living faith and the harmony between the human and divine. Unframed, 24"x36", in good condition. From a private collection. A Certificate of Authenticity will be issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery upon purchase.

About this artist

Self-taught Haitian master painter Andre Pierre was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, in 1914 and passed away in 2005. He is considered one of Haiti's greatest artists and the pre-eminent painter of the Haitian spirits, the worthy successor of noted Hector Hyppolite. His artworks have been reproduced in many books on naive and religious art. He injects rhythms into his works through lines and colors, says Gerald Alexis in his book Peintres Haitiens. Get the Book "Peintres Haitiens" Now!
