Description

This original 24"x20" oil on canvas, Riverbank Scene, by Haitian impressionist painter Fritz Louizor (1949–1984), portrays a tranquil moment of daily life along a riverside village. Women draw water, children play, and an ox grazes nearby—each figure rendered with Louizor’s delicate palette knife technique and luminous brushwork. Warm tones of gold, green, and blue capture the beauty and rhythm of rural Haiti, a hallmark of the artist’s impressionist vision. Fritz Louizor, a graduate of the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince and younger brother of the celebrated Ernst Louizor, became known for his richly textured surfaces and radiant sense of light. His paintings celebrate the dignity of Haitian culture and the poetry of ordinary life through color and movement. This painting comes from a prestigious private collection in the Dominican Republic and remains unframed and in excellent condition. Upon purchase, Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery will issue a Certificate of Authenticity (COA). A serene and masterful work by one of Haiti’s leading impressionists, Riverbank Scene reflects Louizor’s enduring legacy in modern Haitian art.

About this artist

Fritz Louizor (Haitian, 1949–1984) was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and became one of the most talented impressionist painters of his generation. The younger brother of the renowned artist Ernst Louizor, Fritz shared a lifelong dedication to portraying the vibrancy of Haitian life through light, color, and texture. After attending Lycée Toussaint Louverture High School, Louizor pursued his passion for art at the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s most influential art institution. He later studied and worked alongside his brother, developing a refined impressionist style characterized by palette knife techniques, rich impasto, and radiant tonal harmony. Fritz Louizor’s paintings often depict rural and urban scenes filled with movement and atmosphere—marketplaces, riverbanks, and village life painted with poetic warmth and elegance. Though his life was tragically cut short, his legacy endures through his expressive depictions of Haiti’s beauty and humanity. Explore the life and available artworks of Fritz Louizor through Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery, the leading source for modern and contemporary Haitian art.
