About this artist

Josue Joseph was born on April 26, 1947, in Santiago, Cuba, to Haitian parents. In 1957, his family settled in Jacmel, Haiti, where he began painting in 1962 under the guidance of his uncle, renowned Haitian artist Alexandre Grégoire. Joseph is celebrated for his finely detailed paintings of Haiti's tropical landscapes, lush vegetation, birds, village life, and rural scenes. His meticulous brushwork creates richly textured compositions often compared to embroidery, making his style instantly recognizable among contemporary Haitian artists.  His work is included in the permanent collection of the Waterloo Center for the Arts in Iowa, home to one of the world's leading collections of Haitian art. His paintings are also illustrated in John Allen Franciscus' reference book Haiti: Voodoo Kingdom to Modern Riviera, underscoring his importance in modern Haitian art. Today, Josue Joseph's original paintings are collected internationally for their vibrant color, exceptional craftsmanship, and enduring celebration of Haiti's landscapes and cultural heritage.
