Description

This striking original oil painting by Louverture Poisson, one of Haiti’s most respected artists, portrays the quiet dignity and inner strength of an elder man smoking a pipe. Executed in warm, earthy tones, the portrait highlights Poisson’s mastery of light and shadow (chiaroscuro) and his ability to capture deep emotion through subtle brushwork. The artist’s painterly technique and thoughtful composition lend a timeless, contemplative quality to the subject’s gaze, celebrating the resilience, wisdom, and spirit of Haitian culture. The work exemplifies the soulful beauty of Haitian figurative art, where realism meets poetic humanity. This unframed, signed oil on canvas is in excellent condition and comes directly from a prestigious private collection in the Dominican Republic. A certificate of authenticity from our gallery will accompany the sale, ensuring the painting’s provenance and value.Own a rare and expressive Louverture Poisson painting—a collector’s treasure that honors the artistic legacy of Haiti

About this artist

Louverture Poisson was born in the town of Les Cayes in 1914. He came to Port-au-Prince in 1942 to enlist in the Air Force and joined the Art Center in 1948. Although Poisson served in the Haitian air force and wore the uniform with pride, his military experience failed to stimulate his historical interest. When he does turn to historical themes, the narrative is without affection and is eclipsed by the work's particular formal aspect. History seems to have been more of a pretext, allowing him to produce elaborate, animated compositions, very different from his intimate interiors and peaceful rural scenes. Poisson's obsession with depicting light is continuous in his much-varied work. Gérald Alexis, in his book Peintres Haitiens, describes his work as a long pilgrimage towards perfection in pictures drawn from his environment. Louverture Poisson died in 1985 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
