About this artist
Luce Turnier was born in Jacmel, Haiti, on February 24, 1924, and passed away in Paris, France, in 1995. She became one of the few female founding artists at Haiti's Centre d'Art, making her mark on modernism in 1945 when she was just 21 years old. However, shortly after Haitian artists began gaining international recognition, stereotypes emerged about what their art should look like, which influenced what would and would not sell. Haitian painters were often viewed as simple and primitive, perceived to be unaware of the broader art world context, and the art scene was predominantly male. As a woman and a modernist artist, Luce did not receive the same recognition or success as her male counterparts at the Centre d'Art. In the 1950s, she left Haiti on scholarships to study in New York and then in Paris. This period was isolating for her, as she faced the significant challenge of creating art that was genuinely her own, free from the pressures of conforming to the concept of "Haitian" art or what was commercially viable. During this time, she began to explore abstraction and collage. Her style merged European influences while remaining true to the textures, colors, and spirit of the Haitian people. Today, her work is displayed in prominent galleries and museums around the world and is widely collected. As Gerald Alexis noted, “Turnier's portraits reflect the Haitian soul, while her studies are a hymn to tropical nature.”
