About this artist

Born in 1935 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Manuel embarked on her artistic journey by drawing in her homeland before advancing her studies at the Academy of Drawings and Painting in San Juan, Puerto Rico, in 1953. She further honed her skills at the University of Rochester the following year. Between 1970 and 1978, she showcased her work in Haiti, the United States, and the Dominican Republic. Notably, in 1981, a distinguished jury of Haitian art figures selected her painting "The Market" to be reproduced as a postage stamp. Manuel was instrumental in restoring the iconic "gingerbread" house in Port-au-Prince, which now serves as the Defly Museum. This museum's profits directly benefit the Haitian Association for Handicapped Children. Additionally, she is a proud member of the Women Painters group. Gérald Alexis emphasizes Manuel's impact in his book "Peintres Haitiens," stating, "Manuel's draftsmanship and her unshaded style inject a captivating rhythm into all her work."
