Vieux’s expressive use of color and bold outlines brings warmth and vitality to this tender scene of everyday life in Haiti. The golden foliage and vivid garments of the women create a harmonious balance between nature and human connection. Known for his stylized figures and vibrant palette, Philippe Vieux captures the dignity and grace of Haitian womanhood through simple yet evocative compositions. His work combines folk art sensibility with elegant design, celebrating the culture and spirit of Haiti. This painting comes from a prestigious private collection in the Dominican Republic and remains unframed and in excellent condition. About this artist

Philippe Vieux (born 1932, Port-au-Prince, Haiti) is a distinguished Haitian painter known for his refined and introspective approach to modern Haitian art. Educated at Collège Jean Jacques Dessalines and Collège de Port-au-Prince, Vieux began his artistic journey at the Centre d’Art in Port-au-Prince, where his first watercolor exhibition attracted early acclaim. Encouraged by mentors Dewitt Peters and Francine Murat, Vieux transitioned from watercolor to oil painting, developing a style marked by elegance, balance, and quiet emotional depth. His work often reflects influences from theatre, classical music, and literature—each canvas revealing a contemplative harmony that captures the cultural richness of Haiti. Today, Philippe Vieux is recognized among the voices of Haitian art, contributing to the country’s enduring artistic legacy with works that celebrate discipline, grace, and individuality. Source: Haiti Voodoo Kingdom by John Franciscus, p. 92.
