Spencer Depas was a prominent Haitian artist, born in Jacmel, Haiti, on either August 27, 1925, or 1928. He passed away in 1989. At the age of three, he did not complete his secondary education and later entered J.B. Damier Technical High School in 1942, where he learned cabinetmaking. In 1947, while working as a cabinetmaker at the Art Center, he met American artist Alex Jones, who introduced him to painting. In 1950, Depas played a significant role in founding the Foyer des Arts Plastiques. In 1954, he moved to the United States, where he studied at the Cranbrook Academy of Art and later at Wayne University. After returning to Haiti in 1956, he became a member of Galerie Brochette. In 1960, Depas relocated to New York and attended the Lyly Blumeneau Workshop, where he studied weaving and later taught from 1962 to 1963. He then lived in Germany from 1963 to 1968, taking the opportunity to travel throughout Europe and visit various art centers.
