Description

Vodou Ceremony at Cemetery presents a striking nighttime scene at a Haitian burial ground, where two men bend in ritual offering before a cemetery cross marked with a skull and sacred symbols, roosters placed at its base. Rows of white tombs and distant green hills fill out the background, anchoring the moment in a real, specific place. André Pierre, one of the founding figures of the Centre d'Art movement and a practicing Vodou priest himself, drew directly from lived ceremony to create scenes like this one, making his work a rare and authentic window into Haitian spiritual life. This stunning, unframed painting is rendered in oil on Masonite at 50 x 39 inches and is signed by the late, famous Haitian master. The piece is in overall good condition, with minor scratches noted on the top left. This artwork comes from the private collection of Georges S. Nader and will ship from New York. Watch the video! About this artist

André Pierre was the dominant artist of the second generation and is considered the spiritual heir to the legendary Hector Hyppolite. Collectors and journalists from around the world visited him in the modest hut where he painted lovingly detailed portraits of the gods of the Vodou pantheon by the light of an oil lamp. His mission was to present Vodou as respectable and on par with all the other major religions. His pronouncements on Vodou and life, in general, were wise and sophisticated and were often punctuated with his trademark subterranean chuckle.
