Description

Philomé Obin (1892 to 1986), the revered founder of the Cap-Haïtien school of Haitian painting, depicts the Palais Sans Souci in this commanding scene from 1973. Built for King Henri Christophe in the early nineteenth century, the palace stands as one of the great monuments of Haitian history. Obin renders its tiers of arched windows in warm yellow, set against rose-pink ramparts and a broad stone stairway. Four gate pillars with pale pyramidal caps stand guard in the foreground, and a white balustrade and patterned pavement complete the composition. The work is signed by the artist and inscribed “Cap-Haïtien” at lower right. Obin was known for documenting the history and landmarks of Haiti with precision and quiet dignity, and this painting shows his careful draftsmanship and flat, jewel-like color at their best. It comes from a private collection in Florida. Condition is good, consistent with its age. A certificate of authenticity is included.

About this artist

Philome Obin was born in Limbe in 1891 and died in Cap Haitian in 1986. He was self-taught and one of the first Haitian artists to marvel at the world with his naive art. His art is referred to in all major books on Haitian art and mentioned by many art critics internationally. " Obin's concerns with precision and the respect of reality injects a measure of coldness into his narrative works," says Gerald Alexis in his book "Peintres Haitiens." Get the Book Now!
