Emmanuel Dostaly, commonly known as Mano, was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on March 25, 1947, and died in New York on April 30, 2026. A self-taught artist who also studied at the Académie des Beaux-Arts, Mano became known for his vibrant landscapes and lively depictions of Haitian daily life. Inspired by the people, colors, and atmosphere of Haiti, his paintings capture markets, countryside scenes, and everyday moments with warmth and expressive color. By 1974, his work was represented by several prominent galleries, including the Georges Nader Art Gallery in Port-au-Prince. In 1986, Mano moved to New York and continued exhibiting internationally in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, the United States, Guadeloupe, France, and Belgium. He also co-authored the book Haitian Artists in America with fellow Haitian artists Patrice Piard, Shubert Denis, and Patrick Wah.
