Prospère Pierre Louis (Haitian, 1947-1997)

Prospère Pierre-Louis was born in Jacmel, Haiti, in 1947 and died in November 1997. A leading member of the celebrated Saint-Soleil movement, he was among the first artists to embrace its innovative vision, blending spirituality, symbolism, and Haitian cultural traditions into a distinctive artistic language. His paintings are recognized for their expressive forms, vibrant compositions, and spiritual imagery inspired by Vodou and the natural world. Art critic Gérald Alexis described Pierre-Louis as “an elder of the Saint-Soleil Movement” and noted that he was “among the first to attempt this fascinating experience.” Widely exhibited and collected internationally, Prospère Pierre-Louis is regarded as one of the most important artists of the Saint-Soleil School.
