Description
A dreamlike garden unfolds in this original oil on canvas by Haitian master Bourmond Byron (Jacmel, 1920-2004), measuring 31.5 x 24 in and unframed. Overhead, a radiant spider's web hangs like a portal between realms, a lone spider descending its thread toward a still, glowing lagoon. Below, a fisherman rests beneath fruit-laden trees, caught in a quiet moment suspended between the earthly and the otherworldly. Byron's signature greenish-blue palette bathes the entire composition, drawing the eye toward the luminous center in classic Haitian naïve style, steeped in the artist's well-known voodoo-inspired symbolism. Byron began his career as a carpenter and shipbuilder before a visit to Haiti's famed Centre d'Art in 1948 inspired him to paint. He joined the Centre formally in 1955 and became known for his semi-mystical landscapes rendered in his instantly recognizable blue-green tonality. His work has been exhibited throughout Haiti and the United States and is held in collections including the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Jonathan Demme Haitian Art Collection.
