Description

“Seats at the Ceremony” by J. E. Gourgue is a powerful Haitian Vodou composition centered around a sacred tree surrounded by empty ceremonial chairs, ritual vessels, offerings, and symbolic objects. Executed in Gourgue’s distinctive surrealist style, the painting evokes the spiritual atmosphere of a Vodou gathering suspended between the visible and invisible worlds. The dramatic opening within the tree trunk glows with fiery red and orange tones, creating a mystical focal point suggestive of spiritual presence and ritual energy. Gourgue balances symbolism and silence throughout the composition, transforming ordinary objects into sacred forms charged with mystery and ceremonial meaning. Recognized as one of Haiti’s most important modern masters, J. E. Gourgue is celebrated internationally for his visionary paintings inspired by Haitian spirituality, mythology, and Vodou traditions. His works are held in major public and private collections worldwide. This original oil on masonite painting is signed by the artist and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by Myriam Nader Haitian Art Gallery.

About this artist

Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue (Haitian, 1930-1996) was one of Haiti's most renowned painters of the 20th century. Gourgue began painting at an early age and eventually had his works exhibited throughout Europe and the Americas. His father was a French psychiatrist, and his mother was said to be a Haitian voodoo priestess.

J.E Gourgue typically painted scenes of rural Haitian life and vodou ceremonies. Gourgue, who had no formal training, often combined flowers, mountains, skeletal trees, peasants and their huts, and voodoo symbolism in a personal style that combined surrealism and naive art. "He is beyond dispute the leading figure in modern Haitian painting."
