About this artist

Max Gerbier was born in Milot, Haiti, on September 10, 1951. He began painting at the Centre d’Art in 1973 and later worked within the artistic tradition of Philomé Obin, encouraged by fellow Cap-Haïtien painter Harrison Obin. A member of the renowned Cap-Haïtien School, Gerbier is known for narrative paintings that often tell stories drawn from Haitian daily life, history, and local traditions. His work reflects the structured compositions, attention to detail, and documentary spirit associated with the northern Haitian painting tradition. Art critic Gérald Alexis noted that Gerbier remained faithful to the artistic heritage of Cap-Haïtien, observing that he “depicts daily life in a vigorous idiom and remains true to life.” His paintings are appreciated for their storytelling quality, historical character, and strong connection to the Obin school. Today, Max Gerbier’s paintings are sought after by collectors for their narrative richness and their continuation of one of Haiti’s most important artistic traditions.
