Description

Préfète Duffaut, one of the most celebrated names in twentieth century Haitian painting, captures his signature vision of an imagined hillside city in this richly detailed oil on board composition from around 1960, titled La Ville Imaginaire. A ribbon of pale road winds down through terraced green and ochre mountains, threading past clusters of gingerbread houses in coral, teal, and gold before reaching a harbor dotted with small sailboats. Tall, stylized palms rise against a pale sky, their fronds echoing the rhythm of the rooftops below, while tiny figures in wide brimmed hats make their way along the switchbacks, animating the scene with everyday life. Duffaut developed this imaginary city motif as a way of reimagining Haiti's coastal towns as fantastical, almost architectural visions, blending memory, faith, and invention into a single sweeping view. The device became so closely associated with him that art historians credit it as one of the defining contributions of the Haitian modernist movement. This work comes from a private collection in Naples, Florida, and carries the artist's signature at lower left, with condition consistent with its age. We will provide a Certificate of Authenticity.
